    Sour cream …

I love Tillamook brand ice cream and cheeses. So when I found myself visiting Portland this week I was excited that I had the opportunity to visit their creamery and factory in Tillamook, Oregon. I arranged for my wife and me and our grandkids to get together and visit this icon on the afternoon of April 29. At noon I called the creamery’s office to make certain the facility was handicap compliant, which they are. The office even informed me they had wheelchairs available for our use, if needed. I then confirmed the closing time of the creamery; “6:00 pm, everyday” was the answer. So I got my group together and drove two hours to Tillamook, arriving at 3:45 pm. Only to find the doors locked, and an unresponsive staff who ignored our knocking. It seems they closed early yesterday, at 3:00 pm, for a private event/party. The only notices were paper signs on the barred doors. Nothing on their website, and no hint from the office staff with whom I’d spoken two and one half hours before. The staff person whom I had said “Great, we’ll be seeing you all soon.” Of course I’m disappointed, so I’m passing a bit of that disappointment, frustration and ire back onto the Tillamook organization for their shabby behavior towards us and the couple hundred other folks we saw turned away at their entrances yesterday. From now on, I’m eating Umpqua ice cream.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for Ice Cream!

This tour was more interesting than I thought it was going to be. It was the cheese version of Oompa Loompa's, haha. And, the double scoop of ice cream I had (Marion Berry Swirl and Udderly Chocolate) was so delicious! Sure, there were lots of people there, but they were spread out, some were buying ice cream, some were buying food, other's were checking out the self guided tour and then there was the great gift shop. I would highly recommend it. There is even an interactive area for children.

    An Educational and Enjoyable Afternoon

I stayed in Canon Beach, Oregon and made a special trip to visit the Tillamook Creamery—about an hour drive—and I wasn’t disappointed. The tour was educational on the production of quality cheese. It was wonderful seeing the people at work and it made me appreciate the hard work and dedication of each employee. I ate lunch at the excellent restaurant, of course indulging in a delicious grilled cheese sandwich and finishing with some Tillamook ice cream. It was a wonderful break from beach activities and well worth the time. I was most impressed by the friendliness of everyone there.

    What an education!

We visited several years ago, but they have greatly improved this place! We enjoyed the cheese curds AND the ice cream. The self-guided tour was pretty fascinating and we enjoyed the shop as well. Don't forget to pick up your free cheese samples, too!
